چکیده مقاله:

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a heterogeneous and relatively unknown disease caused by premature immune destruction of red blood cells. While its occurrence is uncommon among children, it is sometimes severe and resistant to treatment. The warm-reactive type contains 70% to 80% of all cases, in which the first-line treatment is considered to be a steroid. Moreover, splenectomy, rituximab (a monoclonal antibody), and immunosuppressive drugs are used in refractory cases, with unclear efficacy and deep suppression of the immune system, which consequently lead to various side effects. This study reports the successful treatment of a life-threatening case using a new method. In this regard, it was stated that using the capacity of Iranian traditional medicine (ITM) as one of the complementary therapies can help in the treatment of this disease. In this case report, we documented the successful treatment of a severe and refractory warm AIHA in a boy, who was resistant to the currently recommended treatments such as corticosteroids, rituximab, and cyclosporine at different time periods. Based on ITM, a novel treatment was performed, which was daily swallowing 4-6 live small freshwater fishes (from Cyprinidae family) for an eight-week period and later being tapered. As a result, this treatment had a rapid response time with no side effects. At the time of performing this study, the patient was in his 5th-year disease-free period. For future research, we recommend the researchers to study the use of this novel treatment in case of resistance to the current established therapies of warm AIHA disease.

A Case Report of Chronic Nonunion Thighbone Fracture Treatment Based on Iranian Traditional Medicine

Objective Nonunion fracture of lower-extremity long bones is really important because these bones bear the weight of the body. Some reasons of nonunion fracture are: Instability and immobility of the fractured fragments; insufficient blood supply to the fractured site; and damage to periosteum and necrosis of periosteal cells caused by insufficient blood supply. There are two methods of nonunio...

Concurrent Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome and Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: a case report

Background: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a life-threatening and scarce disorder characterized by acute renal failure and disease, non-immune microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia, leading to end-stage renal failure or death, and consequently maybe accompanying by extra renal manifestations. Case report: We reported aHUS accompanied by autoimmune hemolytic anemi...

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia in a Patient with Probable Ataxia Telangiectasia: A Case Report

Background: Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is one of the combined immunodeficiency syndromes with immunologic, neurologic, endocrinologic, hepatic and cutaneous abnormalities. Regarding the fact that autoimmune disorders; such as autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), are not generally expected in the course of AT, we present a patient with an unusual presentation of these two conditions. Case present...

UNLABELLED A female in the Netherlands with severe autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) was treated with conventional corticosteroid (2 mg/kg/d in divided doses) and blood transfusions for 18 months without improvement. The presented patient responded to megadose methylprednisolone (MDMP) 30 mg/kg/d for 3 d, followed by 20 mg/kg for 4 d, and subsequently 10, 5, 2, and 1 mg/kg/d each for 1 week. ...

Normocytic Anemia: Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA), Drug-Induced Hemolytic Anemia and Rh Disease

Hemolytic anemia is characterized by intravascular and extravascular destruction of erythrocytes. It manifests if the production of the erythrocytes in the bone marrow is slower than their degradation. A first good differentiation of the several forms of hemolytic anemia can be made between ‘hereditary’ and ‘acquired’. In this article, the most important forms of acquired hemolytic anemia are p...

Successful Treatment of Refractory Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura with Rituximab, a Monoclonal Antibody: a Case Report

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is mostly attributed to the presence of an autoantibody against ADAMTS-13, a metalloprotease that degrades ultralarge von Willebrand protein multimers. Accumulation of vWF multimers and systemic platelet aggregation lead to microangiopathic thrombosis, hemolytic anemia, and end-organ ischemia. Most patients respond to therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), ...
